Steel. Its been more than a year or so since i've rescued this dog. It all started when I wanted a dog, and my mom sayed "yes" as long as I raised my grades. And i did.
I started looking on Craigslist. I wanted a golden retriever mix or shepherd mix. I saw a post of an adoption event in front of a Petco. April. 17, a Saturday. So i printed it, and Dad took me.
I wanted a big dog. Like lab sized. Most of the dogs there were small; chihuahua mixes, terrier mixes. The only dog that was even close to the size i was looking for was this brindle colored dog, that had 2 extra back toes, and floppy-like ears.
The foster parents were there. She had 4 kids of her own, one was an infant. "He's great with other dogs and children." That was good. There was a paper on his cage explaining a few more things. "likes to watch tv, sleep on the couch, good on car rides, good with other dogs, likes cats- unknown".
I decided to adopt this little mutt. I paid the $175 for him, signed some paperwork. Dad took care of the rest, I took steel on a "walk". He pulled so much! And he was really strong. He wanted to say "hi" to every dog and every person. And i let him get away with it.
That dog did pretty good in the car, stuck his head out the window. And when we got home he did fine.
The first time i tried to give him a bath had horrible results. I have his leash hooked up to that thing you screw into the ground. I tugged it to make sure he could excape. So i bring out the hose, and he freaks out! And starts pulling and somehow pulls strong enough to excape. He broke off the meatal part of the leash, the meatl hook part! He runs to the neighbors house, and luckly he was retured saftly.
From that day on, his name was changed to "steel". I say "because he is as strong as steel, and he broke steel".
How does he get along with our 3 cats? Blossom was raised with dogs at an early age from the house we got her from, so she tolerates Steel. Tiger: she doesn't hate him or love him, if we asked her she'd probaly say "yeah get rid of him". Shakespear: He'll sneak up on Steel when he's asleep and paw at him! But thats Shakespear, playing tricks on the dog.
Steel knows that those cats are our pack. He hasen't shown any aggression, only whines when they won't play with him.
Steel is great with other dogs, children, and bunny rabbits! I had to teach him to see the rabbits as our pack, and had to teach him to walk by my side never in front of me. I've taught Steel lots of tricks: Sit, Stay, Come, Spin, and Shake.
Our pack just might grow a bit with a possible doberman puppy on the way. We all know Steel will love him! Steel is now 3 years old.
