CANINE DIABETES........SAMMI OUR DIABETIC DOG

THIS IS SAMMI A MIXED BREED LAB , SAMMI IS 14YRS OLD AND 3YRS AGO HE WAS DIAGNOSED WITH CANINE DIABETES, HE IS NOW ALMOST COMPLETELY BLIND, BUT DOES HAVE A LITTLE VISION, SAYING THAT THOUGH HE IS VERY PLAYFUL HAPPY DOG, HE LOVES ATTENTION FROM OTHER DOGS ASWELL AS HUMANS, HES SO FRIENDLY AND  STILL ENJOYS HIS DAILY WALKS AND LOVES TO SIT IN THE GARDEN BASKING IN THE SUN.

WHEN HE WASFIRST DIAGNOSED WITH CANINE DIABETES IT WAS A WORRY, WHAT WITH HIS AGE AND WORRYING IF HE WOULD BE ABLE TO HANDLE THE INSULIN INJECTIONS,.but we love sammi so much we had to give it a try, he has to be injected twice daily once of a morning and then again at night, we have to be careful with his diet too, He,s such a lovely pleasant little fellow and never complains, sammi came to us because his owner had passed away and it meant he would of been put into a animal rescue home if we hadnt of taken him into our home and our hearts, over the years sammi has brought alot of pleasure to our lives , so needless to say we had to return the love and help him with his illness and at 14yrs old  hes a grand old boy ......here are some facts of CANINE DIABETES

SIGNS OF DIABETES IN DOGS ARE

1.excessive drinking

2.excessive urination

3.weightloss

4.lethargy

5. sudden blindness

OTHER FACTS ABOUT CANINE DIABETES

Diabetes in dogs can occur as young as 18months old, most dogs are between the age of 7 and 10 yrs when diabetes is diagnosed, Approximatly 70% of dogs with diabetes are females. Any breed of dog can be affected, but Daschunds, poodles, minature schnauzers, cairn terriers and springer spaniels are at increased risk. Diabetes is rarely seen in cocker spaniels, german shepherds, collies and Boxers

As with most conditions it is important to to diagnose Diabetes at the earliest possible stage, so if you observe any of the above  signs listed  you should contact your vet  for a check up

The diagnosis of diabetes is fairly simple, ....The presence of high blood sugar levels, and sugar in the urine

canine diabetes is treatable and most diabetic dogs can lead very high quality of lives  just like sammi

virtually all diabetic dogs require insulin therapy, just as in humans the insulin is administrated by injection, which usually is required twice daily to adequately control the disease

Dogs are like humans.  If we eat the right foods and supplements we will be healthy.  My sisters dog is diabetic and was never told by her vet that the dog had to be on a special diet.  She wasn't happy.  But heard from a friend that by changing her dog's diet to Life's Abundance her dog's insulin was dropped to half. Not everyone may have the same results.  A dog named Hunter who was also diabetic. His owner researched different dog biscuits and found that Maggie's Apple Cinnamon Delights was one of the biscuits he could eat.  Visit: www.K9-hunter.blogspot.com for some great information on what Hunter's owner did for him.

Thanks Doc for coming by to visit. my zena eats like a vacum cleaner, she seems to always be hungry. i have found the free zed dried liver treats, don;t raise her sugars at all and at least its a treat, so unfair that she can;t have her cookies anymore. i wish i knew before that when they go blind, certain types of blindness can be lessened with drops for the eyes, zena can see a bit on the sides. its important if they can hold their pee thru the night, to have them in for a test called a curve test to see if she stable or not.. so far the vets are impressed. also the don't handle heat as well either so be careful in the sun..

oh thankyou lisa for sharing your story although it be so sad , no matter how many times you lose a pet thehurt never gets easier  we are fortunate enough that sammi has been doing ok for the last 3 yrs, sometimes his blood sugar gets real high and we have to take great care to prevent coma which ofcourse could be fatal also when his sugar is high or rising he seems to lose his apetite  and ofcourse hes got to have food before the insulin injection can be given  so sometimes its very much a struggle and stressful but we love our babies  and will do anything within our power to help them

Lisa thank your for your story, i am sorry for your loss honey, its very hard and my first dog passed Kemo within a year, but i knew the signs and was able to get some good advice and now its been 4 years of having her. its soo funny to or rather hear her see her bone or ball!! She listens and uses all her other senses so well, as long as you keep the purse off the floor and clear of anything she has it mapped off to bed now xoww

My poodle developed diabetes when she was 14 yrs old.  She had to have 2 insulin shots a day and the vet and I still couldn't get it under control for long.  She went almost completely blind within a month of her diagnosis but the vet had warned me that this would probably happen.  She only lived 8 months after she was diagnosed.  I hope your furbaby continues to do well, just watch his diet and keep a bottle of karo syrup on hand.  If his blood sugar gets too low, a teaspoon of karo syrup could save his life.
