& by the way YES we love our babies... Dogs are like babies & they should be treated as such. They are always loving, always excited when we get home & when we have sad days they always make us smile.

Awesome comments. Thanks for your advice! I have an Italian greyhound and he generally eats twice a day. He likes carrots, green beans & chicken of course :) He is very athletic (loves running) at thirst I thought he was tooooo skinny but greyhounds are just like that. He hardly ever gets sick because we make sure he eats healthy & when he does the above advice works well. . I take his temp when he is sick & make sure he has a good body temperature. The thermometer from Sanomedics is one of my favorites because is non-contact. It's a little expensive but I find it very convenient.I just try doing things at home before taking my dog to the Vet. He hates the Vet & stars shaking when I take him there. He also gets very nervous with thundering and lighting…

Y yes we do girl. Thats a good idea really to have a stock emergency kitt for the people and the animals!!!. I got stung by a bee 8 weeks ago and 3 days later woke up with like fuzzy vison in my right eye called floaters, i guess i am allergic as i developed a hoarse throat, which is a sign i had no idea. So i was really worried about it and called the vet as lelo has yet to be stung, but poor zenie has been stung 4 times, i always know as she goes and hides, off for a power cuddle with the babies.. big hug girls wandap

A big definite emergency kit item: Benadryl

My Tillie (inspiration for PetBrags) literally died twice - - 100% unconscious within seconds of Bee sting. But before she went over the top and was suddenly deadly allergic, Benadryl probably saved her life more than once. Dogs are like us (according to the Vet), after so many stings throughout a life, deadly allergy can occur. It's a build-up is how it was explained to me. Anyhow, when she died twice, thank God both times we were 1 block from her Vet. It took 2-3 days both times with fluids and emergency meds to get her back. Then after these 2 episodes, which believe it or not were less than a week apart, I had to have an Epi-pen with us at all times, for anaphylactic shock emergencies.

We love our babies, don't we?!

I agree i have had poodles for 20 years and when they throw up bile you need to get them to eat, even if its a cookie just to get them past the nausea. If they are really sick take them to the vet asap. I find that a little bit of pep to really helps and was also recommended by my vets for over 20 years, i give about 1/8th of tspn in a dropper and then wash it down with water, you will find this helps immensely, most poodles are ok with a little dairy, however Lelo who is a cross bich-a-poo does n;t do dairy well at all, so be careful some dogs are lactose intolerant just like some of us. I especially used pep-to when zena got stung by a bee camping she was vomiting, (literally on mommy's face in the middle of the night, and the good wife i am i slept in it as karl would have been furious at it happening) however i gave her pepto and had her drink water and she was fine in the morning, so its a good thing to take with you camping! also take benadryl if your dog gets stung and you notice swelling give them a bit of benedryl and that will help them immensely. Contact your vet to get the right dosage before you go camping!

Tips for Westies and their typical sensitive stomachs:
As with most (not all) Westies, I have to be really careful with little Jazzi. She's actually had stomach surgery due to serious stomach problems - - and I am the most anal and careful person a dog parent could be, about Westie's and their sensitive stomachs. These are the 2 simple things that have saved us many trips to the Emergency Animal Clinic. And sadly, it's taken me 20+ years to find the right formula of things to do and watch.

1. If I see that a bad tummy episode is coming on, I give Jazzi a tiny piece of pepto bismol tablet (1/4) FYI: I have read where people say this is not good. I have not had any bad experiences with the small doses, and our Vet recommended this. So, who knows for sure? It helps Jazzi every single time. Within 30 minutes to 1 hour, she's totally over her sick tummy. I can tell by her body language, eyes, and the worst: throwing up, that she's having a bad time with her tummy. You kind of have to become an expert on bad tummies when you have a Westie, 7 out of 10 times I would say. I've really learned to catch it early.
2. When she gets up, I find a way to get her to eat if she doesn't want to - - even if a small bite of cheese (real cheese, not sliced). Which BTW, that is absolutely the only treat or thing she can eat outside of dog food, period. This is just Jazzi, not all Westies. All treats, no matter how special they are, even sensitive tummy types, still make her sick.

My Vet taught me this about feeding a few bites before too much time goes by in the mornings. And wow have I seen a big difference since I started doing this. Jazzi seldom ever throws up now. I've had Westies for 25 years, and just finding this out 3 years ago. A Westie's tummy generates more acid than most any dog. If they wait and wait and don't eat, they just get sicker. Of course, like this awesome discussion explains, if your dog is already throwing up, take that 24 hour break for sure. Feed them rice based dog food for sensitive stomachs, or as Angelica writes: "boil rice and skinless chicken. Yogurt and cottage cheese will help the inflamed intestines".

Wow Angelica! What a great blog post, just excellent. Thank you for sharing with us. I've been at this computer for over 30 hours. So hopefully my ramblings will make some sense.

Best to you,
Bragger
