My mother just loves hedgehogs and wanted one for 10 years before my boyfriend and I got Kitty for her two Christmas's ago. Kitty is albino and not as outgoing as a normal hedgehog because albinism affects her ability to see. Hedgehogs don't see well anyway, but an albino is practically blind... So Kitty is very skittish and huffy. My mum got word of a hedgehog at a wonderful pet store we go to (a really huge family owned reputable pet shop that does a lot of good for animals and adoptions). He wasn't selling... so we went to have a look at him. He was a "pinto" hedgie and mum fell in love all over again. It turned out to be a female though, and we found out that females tend to go very well with each other and even bond, although they don't usually need a companion. My mother thought this hedgie might help Kitty become more outgoing, plus, she couldn't say no to that cute little face. You should see my mother when she meets a Hedgehog... she goes nuts!! While researching hedgehog colors, I found out this new hedgie is actually a Salt and Pepper Pinto Snowflake African Pygmy Hedgehog - quite an unusual find. No doubt, this new hedgie has indeed helped Kitty come out of her shell, and she now explores the living room floor with her little buddy - Piggles. Before, Kitty would just sit on the floor and huff, rather than explore. Hedgehogs are very inexpensive to care for... In the 1.5 years mum's had Kitty, she's only bought 2 SMALL bags of cat food. I think that's remarkable. She got Piggles a little over a week ago, but I waited before I added her to this page as with most pets, just to make sure they do well first. They're doing great. They share the sleeping log together, take turns running in the wheel and making messes - and Kitty is much calmer. And my mother? Well... she started taking walks with me... FINALLY!
