Today is exactly a year since we first brought home little Georgia. What a change that dog has undergone since then. She was 4 month old when we took her home from the shelter. She had a split open upper lip, open wounds almost everywhere on her body and face. She was shaking and terrified of us and the other dogs. Little Georgia had come in to the shelter as a bait puppy. She wasn't a purebred Pit. She was part boxer part pit and so there was no room for her as a breeding dog and no room for her as anything than a toy for the fighting dogs that were seized with her. Our first order of merit was to take her to our vet and have her stitch up as best they could. Then we took her back home and the long process of healing her physical as well as psychological wounds began. It has been hard. It would have been a lot harder I believe if it hadn't been for our wonderful Russell.
Russell is the dog that all the other dogs love. He missed his calling when he turned out to be a male dog. He took that little wounded dog to him and would baby her and chase the others away when she needed space and gradually she began to warm up to the other dogs. It was so much easier to get her to warm up to us, though we had to wait until she was 1 year old to have her spayed because of trust issues. When I was outside with her today, watching her play around with Russell and Velvet I am amazed it is the same dog. She is as happy go lucky as any dog can be. It is as if all the bad things that happened to her never happened. But we will always remember because the physical scars are still very visible. Thank you Lord for letting us take this wonderful girl home and for allowing us to help her become the wonderful, playful, silly girl she is today.
