Do any of you know about a dog having a hematoma because the have shaked their head so much that this occurs?  My Mickie has been treated for this and been on prednisone, and ointment for this condition.  Now a few weeks later her ears are really swollen and the vet says she needs to have surgery.  Well that surgery will cost over 3000.00 dollars and I truly can't afford that.  If anyone has a suggestion or knows where I can get more information I would appreciate any help you can give me.

Thank you so much Allison.  That is the way my Mickies ears are, swollen and very warm.  I already had her one ear drained and it didn't change anything.  I have been going to this same vet now for 6 years and I guess it is time for a change.  Mickie will have cauliflower ear but in the end it is better that then putting her through a lot of trauma with no good results.  I have done everything the vet said to do, cleaning her ears once a week, the ointment and also giving her a zyrtec once a day for allergies.  I will look for a holistic vet and I am sure somewhere around Raleigh there must be one.  Thank you so much again for replying to my request it sure has helped me to make a better decision.  I will keep you posted on what is happening.

Hugs to you from me Mickie and Sassie.

Hey Kathi, my Kyra has had this in both ears. Her ears were SO swollen and felt like they were just going to burst. My vet told me that a lot of vets will say that surgery is needed and then a tube need to be placed for drainage and that it is a pain in the butt and you cannot leave them alone during this time so they do not disturb the tube. He recommended that I leave it alone and heal itself. She does have "cauliflower ear" now, but in the long run it was way cheaper and you cannot tell it is different until you feel her ears. This was all caused by her having chronic ear infections. Instead of a pricey surgery, my vet took a biopsy of her ear wax/infection to narrow down what the problem was and then was treated with the specific drops she needed. Never had a problem with head shaking or ear infections since! Maybe try going to a holistic vet? I am lucky enough to have a vet that does not want to put me or my girl through unnecessary producres just to make a few extra bucks. I don't know your vet, but maybe it's time to find a new one? Anyway, good luck with these hematomas and please keep me updated on how he's doing! (BTW, Kyra was not put on any prednisone or ointment for this either...)
