Dog- Kobi’s legacy of love

Kobi, which means “joy” in Japanese, and I are a registered therapy team with “Paws for the Soul.” We have encouraged many other teams to join us when we visit our local United Methodist nursing home. Paws for the Soul is a ministry that began with one little abused dog who brought gifts of joy and forgiveness to everyone he met!

Kobi was quick to “out think” me! When I brought his crate into the kitchen on Wednesday nights in preparation for our Thursday morning visits, Kobi would gleefully spin in circles, run around the kitchen table and back to the door, anxious to go, even though the visit wasn’t scheduled until the next day! I learned to put the crate in the car from the out-of-view basement door. Next, Kobi learned to recognize our visitation shirt with its logo that hung in the bathroom and he displayed the same excited behavior. He also came to know the myriad of costumes that he loved to dress up in, thrilling the residents on our visits. I learned to hide the shirt AND costumes if I wanted any peace the night before visitation!

Kobi’s life focus, and mine, was to find excitement and joy in what God intended for him. Not even an unfortunate and unintentional roughness by a resident during one visit daunted his love for the human race. I did not think we would visit that wing again because I assumed he would be afraid of that area. Yet, on our next visit, Kobi struggled to take me to that wing, his stubby tail going a mile a minute and reminding me once more of his ability to forgive and continue to love.May each of you who enjoys this work be blessed by the gifts of your animals, for they are their legacy to us and to those whom we visit.
