Inhumane Humanity

My hands shook as I listened to a voice mail on my cell phone. I could not believe it. I had just received a call for an interview at my dream job! If everything went well, I would be the newest member of the Missouri Humane Society as an Adoption Counselor. My husband and I visit their Macklind location at least once a month to give treats to the animals still searching for their forever homes. To think that I would get to be a part of such a wonderful group was mind blowing. However, my…

Expo Etiquette

Every year, my husband and I attend the Pet Expo held at the St. Charles Convention Center in St. Charles, Missouri.  We would always bring at least three of our fur babies with us.  This was actually the first year when my husband was vehement about leaving everyone at home.

I could not imagine going without them!  I love including them in family outings as much as we can.  Not only does it provide great socialization practice for them, but it allows me to soak up all of the…

Canine Carnival 2014

My apologies once again, for being behind on my blogging.  We attended the annual Canine Carnival, held at Tilles Park in St. Louis, Missouri.  There were tons of adorable dogs (and even a few cats)!  With tons of games, food and shopping, it was easy to lose track of time.  The day passed so quickly, but was tons of fun.  And all proceeds from the purchase of the Canine Carnival t-shirt…

Curious Kitty

Tomorrow will officially be October!  And we all know what that means.  Halloween is rapidly approaching.

Miracle, our rescue kitty, has decided to start celebrating a little early.  She has an unusual fascination with my pumpkin tote bag.  It was housing a few Halloween decorations, but now....you'll have to see for yourself.…

Darling Dachshunds

As we pulled onto the fairground lot, there were Dachshunds as far as the eye could see.  The first two beauties took our breath away as we stepped out of our car.  They both had luxurious, long hair that blew in the chilly September wind.

This was our very first trip to the Midwest Dachshund Festival!  The event is held annually at the Vermillion…

Deformed Darlings

As you all know, I am a HUGE animal lover.  Not only do I love to rescue dogs and cats (just one cat for now), but I also enjoy learning about other ways to help our furry friends.  Finding free apps on iTunes, such as Pawcard, attending animal themed charity walks, reading…

Exasperating Expo

I had been waiting for the pet expo since December 2013. The weekend had finally arrived and I was pumped. I was also excited to debut my newest pet parent shirt that reads: “Yes…I do love my dog as much as you love your child.”

 …

Tricky Tripods

One evening my husband began to tell me about a contest that he had heard about on the radio.  InstaCredit Automart was having a photo contest and the winner would get to be in the next InstaCredit Automart commercial!  We looked at each other and said, “Penny!”

She is our adorable tripod baby that was born with a deformed front paw and a severe overbite. …

Careless Kids

My husband and I are blessed to own our home.  We love the extremely large back yard.  And so do our wonderful fur babies.

Upon arriving home from work one day, I let our babies outside to do their business.  I went into the bathroom, which has a window that faces into the back yard.  I noticed that our neighbor's dog was being followed by three young boys...all carrying sticks in their hands.

I watched the boys to make sure that they were not hitting the dog. …

Wonderfully Weird

Something happened today that I was not expecting. A person at my place of employment (who shall remain nameless) stated: "You're a little weird, Lauren T."

In retrospect, I have been called far worse. But, this surprising revelation really stung. Somehow I found the strength to say, "How?" This person appeared to be at a loss for words. I suppose he/she thought that I would just laugh it off or walk away with my tail between my legs (figuratively, of course). All I wanted was an…

Present Pets

As soon as our eyes locked, I knew he was the one.  His body was tan with a white stripe running down to his snout.  And his tail curled into a tiny “q.”

My husband thought I was crazy.  But, despite his protesting, I filled out the adoption paperwork.  After all, this dog wasn’t going to be…

Proper Pet Etiquette

Since I was a little girl, I can remember being around dogs.  My Grandma went through a series of dogs that included a Poodle, Pomeranian and Shih Tzu From owning Spots, a Border Collie, I was also used to handling large dogs.

After attending several dog centered events with my husband, we quickly discovered that many parents (both fur and human) and children do not exercise the proper…

BSL BS

My husband and I recently spent a fun weekend adoption hoping.  We are not looking to add another addition to the family.  We simply enjoy looking at all of the beautiful animals and donating where we can.

Stray Rescue St. Louis was hosting their annual "The One" event.  All pet adoptions were just $14!  And they do not let people traipse in and out of the areas where the dogs are kept.  Instead, they have a large binder that contains photos and biographies of all of their…

An Act of Dog Project

I love to connect with people via social media and blogs.  As I was perusing people on LinkedIn, I came across Mark Barone.  This man has started a phenomenal project called "An Act of Dog."

Barone is creating a memorial for dogs that have been euthanized in shelters simply because their "time was up."  He will be traveling across the United States and hand-painting 5,500 dog portraits.  Why 5,500?  This is the number of dogs that are euthanized daily.

I could…

Abominable Adoptions

I fell in love from the moment I saw him.  His name was Cliff.  He didn’t look like most cats.  Cliff had a cleft palette!

Matt and I had made the mistake of going to Petsmart to purchase food for our cat, Miracle.  Little did we know that this day was part of the National Adopt-a-thon weekend.  Bad news for an animal lover like me.

While…

Frightening Foster

My husband warned me not to get into fostering.  I couldn’t help it!  I just have so much love to give our furry friends.  And I am always looking for ways to help these poor creatures.

After searching some local groups’ websites, I made my decision to become a foster parent.  The rules were fairly simple:  You must bring the dog to at…

Turbulent Therapy

Adriel and I have been volunteering with Therapy Dogs International for four years.  As a certified Therapy Dog, Adriel is allowed to visit hospitals, schools, and other locations.  She provides touch therapy to patients of nursing homes and hospice centers and lends an ear to children in local kids clubs.

And we have enjoyed every minute of it!  I love seeing people's faces light up as Adriel enters the room.  I should point out that Adriel has a very distinctive feature. …

Fur vs. Flesh

It appears that a great division is forming within our nation.  No, it has nothing to do with politics.  The chaos is being caused by...fur parents!

This term has become quite popular within the last few years.  And there certainly is no lack of propaganda.  I own a t-shirt that reads "Dog Mom" and proudly display a magnet on my car that reads the same.

But, not everyone is happy with this term.  Who, you may ask?  Those that have human children.  To them, fur…
