If you keep fish, you need to know this because if you get this bug in your tank, you won't be successfully keeping fish again until you start all over! Have you ever had all or most of your fish die on you for seemingly no reason? Or contract a bacterial infection that appeared to be something like closed fins, red sores, a bent back or bizarre symptoms like sudden death or holes that you can't find in your standard fish disease book? Welcome to the horrible world of fish…

My mother just loves hedgehogs and wanted one for 10 years before my boyfriend and I got Kitty for her two Christmas's ago. Kitty is albino and not as outgoing as a normal hedgehog because albinism affects her ability to see. Hedgehogs don't see well anyway, but an albino is practically blind... So Kitty is very skittish and huffy. My mum got word of a hedgehog…

You see, Pepper, Titan and Bandit hang out together a lot. Pepper didn't use to get along with Bandit, but now that they're friends, Pepper likes to make fun of and play pranks on Bandit... as seen here with Pepper laughing. I don't know what Pepper said to him, but poor Bandit looks like his feelings were hurt!…

Titan has only been with me since November 20, 2008, so not all of the bugs (pun intended) are out of his system yet. First, I had to put some weight on him because he was still too skinny when I got him. On top of that, he had chronic diarrhea, which is common in German Shepherds due to that shorter colon which is akin to the wolf (dogs are carnivores, wolves and dogs that are more closely related to them tend to have systems which make it even more important to feed a natural raw diet like…

Everything died in my 30 gallon fresh water tank, including my beloved Rope Fish. I feel horrible for this because it could have been prevented. What's worse, I think it might be the cause of Eyes, my Leopard Gecko going blind this past year. How could I have been so stupid? Usually my pets live for years... some even live past their life spans.
I take very good care of my pets, but the rusty tank stand supporting my 30 gallon (previously my mum's tank and stand that she's had for…

His name is Duke and he's 1 year old. I can't believe this is finally happening! He still acts like a puppy and needs a lot of training, but I'm ready for it. I'm going to meet him, and 9 chances out of 10, take him home tomorrow afternoon! He's going to sleep on the couch in my room. It really happened fast...3 days fast...
Pepper is going to be grumpy, but he'll get over it. This big boy just wants to play all of the time! The organization that picked him up gets the dogs that need…

Pepper is only 7 years old and is wasting away. There are only two possibilities: a pancreatic deficiency OR cancer. He may be the fastest dog that comes to the dog park (second only to a Greyhound), and he may carry 4-6 pounds on his back for 1.5 hours and still have energy to burn, but he's sick. He lost 1.4 pounds of muscle in 2 months. In a year he has lost 4 inches around his neck of pure muscle. He can now fit in his puppy collar. He went from 15 inches around the neck to about 11. You…

Southern Toads and toads in general are not considered social animals, but rather solitary. I have kept Southern Toads (and one Woodhouse) since I was 9 years old. I am am never without at least one toad for more than a few weeks and have found quite the contrary to be true. Every toad I have had has done better with at least one other toad. When by themselves, especially after the death of all other tank-mates, they stop eating. My male toad was in…

A little over a day ago at the dog park, a white dog wanted to play with Pepper by a startling jump-like motion. (I don't know how to describe it.) Pepper mimicked this behavior and they did this back and forth a few times. Today a female brindle Boxer showed up at the park. She had energy and was running around. To my disbelief, Pepper playfully chased her at top speed for nearly an hour! This is just another step for Pepper's socialization. I was beginning to wonder if he would ever learn to…

Rusty was Pepper's younger brother. He was 6 years old and mistreated. When my grandmother passed away, my mum asked my uncle if I could have him and he agreed. Mum didn't bring him back from her last trip because my uncle wouldn't…

Butterball
Ginger
My two female toads , Butterball and Ginger, were with me for 2 years. Tonight they both died mysteriously after looking perky and healthy yesterday. Ginger was fighting a bacterial abscess on her face and it seems as if she may have lost that battle. One of her pupils was normal size and the other was the size of a pin head, indicating brain damage. Everything else about her looked normal. I…

Fat Fish is a little fish store along the Gulf Coast. I bought my lionfish there and I now realize that I rescued it... I really needed a job for a lot of monetary reasons, and I liked that place because they have marine fish and supplies close to home. Mum made me go in there often so they would know I was serious about the job. Finally I got a call. The interview went well despite my sweating like a nervous pig due to my high level of social anxiety. I guess it was the wrong job to apply…

The place I'm looking to get a job at has had a beautiful Black Volitan Lion Fish for over two months. I wanted it since I saw it about 2 weeks ago. I got $80 total for my 20th birthday and I decided to go get that fish! Mum and I have had a Lion Fish before... same kind, and he was HUGE. This one is a baby, and very hungry... I added some pictures of it while it's still small because they grow very fast. Snuggles and Stripe have taken well to the new addition, and to Snuggles, it should be a…

THE OLD PEPPER: Pepper came to us at 8 weeks old when granny came for a visit. He bonded with me and we played a lot until I went to a math and science boarding high school. I had to be gone all week each week, so he turned to mum. He had all the love he could ever want, but mum always babied him and got him excited. He was obedient in the house too... sit, stay, come, stand, etc. What was missing? Socialization with other dogs, people and kids. Walks with Pepper were just terrible.…

Eight Belles was put down after racing with colts in the most recent Kentucky Derby. The news reported that race horses are being put down more and more due to the increasing number of injuries. According to CNN, these injuries could be due to over-breeding which is causing less soundness in the horse.
Puppy mills are notorious! Look at the country's most popular dog breeds... They all have major inheritable genetic health problems because after you breed a bitch so many times, she…

I recently learned that 2008 is the year of the frog. I have Planet Earth on dvd thanks to my boyfriend, and it tells of how we might loose half of all amphibian species within our lifetime!! Why? Habitat destruction and pesticides were the major threat for a while, but now the biggest threat has been spread by scientists experimenting with African Clawed Frogs in South America. An accident occurred and a fungus leaked out into the water that causes Chitridiomycosis, or Chitrid for short. It is…

I've been taking 3 - 3.5 hour walks lately... mostly uphill to the trail. I wonder what my potential is when I can do that after being sedentary for years and not very active before that. It feels good... I think it reset my back or something because today I can walk upright for the first time in my life and it feels right!
After my walk today I had my usual tuna salad wrap. I sat outside to eat it and there was a couple with a black Miniature Schnauzer. I kept starring at her... She…

Rusty is Pepper's little brother and is about 6 months younger. My grandparents kept him and let him run free on the ranch. Easy for a hound... but Schnauzers require more attention. Normally if left alone or ignored, a Schnauzer will become destructive. Rusty used to be able to run around with the hound, Dog. Dog died at about 20 years old about a year ago, leaving Rusty by himself. Now that both of my grandparents are gone, Rusty gets food from my aunt and uncle. He has about 350 acres of…

Carbon dioxide emissions are at an all time high, causing global
warming to accelerate faster than ever as heat is trapped in our
atmosphere. Cytridiomycosis may be the amphibian's number one enemy
right now, but before this deadly fungus spread from Africa, many
species still went extinct due to habitat destruction and human
expansion. This is still a big threat today, as it is for ALL life.
Humans are causing this sad elimination of nature, and just as…
