I was a bird lover for 35 years and lived with 5 exotic birds until the necessity for a lung transplant in 1999 required me to find new homes for my beloved pets. Since I strongly believe in the great joy pets add to life, I researched dog breeds while awaiting my transplant. Soon after my miraculous Gift of Life, I found Raji through an ad in the newspaper. He was 9 months old and a perfect age for a beginning dog owner. Unfortunately, he was involved in a biting incident with a member of my extended family 9 years later and we were forced to find him a new home as we lost our homeowners insurance as a result. I adopted Boss from a friend of the family when he was only 6 weeks old. My son adopted Nimbus from our local shelter and once Boss was the only dog in the house, he chased her to no end. After about 6 weeks of that, I insisted that I wanted to find another Boston as a playmate for Boss. We found a breeder in Wisconsin (about 150 miles from our house) and added Willie to our family. He was unnamed for 2 days until my husband, son and I got together at Denny's after church and went over my 2-1/2 page list of prospective names. We unanimously decided on Wilson because my dad's name was Earl William and we didn't want to name our dog Earl! Boss & Willie took to each other immediately. Since I had always been a bird lover, I never was very interested in cats. Nimbus seemed to ignore me because my dogs were always near, but her attitude changed drastically last fall when my son went away to college and "gram" was put in charge of feeding her. My husband takes care of the litter box due to my suppressed immune system. I could write a book about the antics of my three pets. Boss is an expert at flatulence and bait and switch. Willie is "Mr. Me Too" and gives the sloppiest kisses ever. Nimbus loves to watch them act silly from a chair or her tower (of which she has 3) and will swat them with her paw as they walk by. My pets make me laugh every day.

Was the arrival of your Pet Kid(s) planned or is there a story?

I have 2 stories regarding how I found Boss & Willie. In July of 2008, we went to northern Wisconsin to visit my sister for a few days. Her son & his wife stopped to visit the first night we were there. Heidi said to me, "Judy, I have a friend who has a Boston puppy for sale!" I asked her to get me some more information and she immediately called her friend. She kept teasing my husband that night by saying, "Boy, wait till Mike brings that puppy over." The day before we were to go home, I asked my sister to contact Heidi and see if we could make arrangements to meet the puppy. We set up a meeting halfway between our locations at a park. The owners wanted to know if we would like to see the rest of the family and when I agreed, brought the parents and another Boston along, too. It was love at first sight for my son and me. I asked my husband what he thought and he said, "I'm not for it, but I won't stop you from doing what you want." I told him he was outvoted 2:1 and we ended up taking Boss home with us. He spent his first night in a plastic tote in the shower stall of my sister's new home because she had light carpeting. I named him Boss after my favorite high school teacher whom everybody called "Boss." I later found out that Boss is a very popular name for Bostons. About 2 days later, my husband asked if he could change his vote. Boss was very lonesome when Raji went to a new home so I searched the local shelters and Petfinder for another Boston. I ended up finding a brindle Boston pup at a Wisconsin breeder. I showed my husband the on-line picture of the puppy, and he said, "That's the ugliest thing I've ever seen." Five seconds later, he offered to pay half as my birthday present which was to be in 3 days. I spoke to the breeder a second time and my son and I traveled 150 miles the next day to meet him and bring him home.

Likes:

Boss likes toys that squeak or make noise, especially the ones that just fit in his mouth. He likes to play "show and tell" by walking up to everyone with a toy in his mouth, but he usually will not let anyone have it. I'm working on getting him to "drop it" and then we play fetch with it. Willie loves stuffed toys that are bigger than he is. Willie's specialty is removing stuffing from toys, but you never know when he'll do it. Some have been made into carcasses right away and others have been played with for over a year. Both Boss & Willie LOVE to go to our local dog park. Boss, being the friendly guy that he is, has to go up and greet every dog and human that comes into the park. After an hour at the park, you don't see them for the rest of the day because they are so worn out from all the running. Willie is our "Scaredy Guy." He is the one that's "all bark and no bite;" I think he's trying to protect his house, but to him that includes the whole block around it. Boss likes to eat Spot's Stew Chicken canned dog food and Natural Balance beef sausage. Willie needs to eat kibble (a mixture of Blue Buffalo Wilderness Chicken, Halo Spot's Stew Chicken & Solid Gold Barking at the Moon) because he throws up whenever he eats canned dog food. He also has a tendency to throw up if he drinks his water too fast. They both love dental treats and rawhide chewies. I sometimes make them organic treats, also. Willie never met a treat he didn't like, but Boss can be pretty fussy sometimes. Nimbus eats dry cat food which is a combination of Halo Spot's Stew Chicken for Indoor Cats, Blue Buffalo Wilderness Chicken for Cats and Solid Gold Indigo Moon). She likes Greenies cat treats.

Pet-Peeves:

Boss: flatulence, walks as he poops so it gets on the sidewalk
Willie: Mr. Destructo, doesn't tell us when he needs to go out, likes to lick EVERYTHING
Nimbus: Walks on everything and knocks things off so Willie can run off with them, very vocal when she wants attention

Nimbus: Dynamite (stuffed w/catnip), Teenie Sardini (stuffed w/catnip), wands

My Favorite Treats:

Boss: liver treats, Red Barn rawhide rolls stuffed w/peanut butter or chicken, rawhide
Willie: I never met a treat I didn't like!
Nimbus: Greenies cat treats (chicken, beef, ocean fish), Organix chicken treats

Favorite Type of Walk:

Boss & Willie pull so much that it's hard to take them for a walk. I need to work on some training with them.

Favorite Ride:

Boss & Willie love any car ride, especially 200 miles up to northern Wisconsin or an almost weekly ride of about 70 miles to Madison to pick up my son.

My Best Pet Tricks:

Boss: dances in circle on hind legs, fetch, shake, give me five, down, catches treats in mid-air
Willie: very good down (longer than Boss!), shake, give me five
Nimbus: gives nice kitty kneads before settling down in your lap, loves to ride on my son's shoulders
