i work at an animal shelter and we always have pit bulls and am staffs. i love the breeds.  they are awesome dogs.  however, everyone needs a reality check.  all pits and am staffs are NOT like the dogs that are living in your house.

am  i saying they are bad dogs?  NO.  far from it.  but i see them when they come into the shelter.  as fighting dogs, bait dogs, beaten up by owners, almost on the verge of being vicious, scared, and ready to eat you if they could get to you.   far cry from your adorable loveable sweet cuddly pit bull.

it's our job to wait the 7 days til the owner comes to pick their dog up. unless it is an abuse case. if no one claims the dog, we can put it up for adoption.  it usually takes 6 months to adopt out a pit or am staff.  in that amount of time, we need to retrain that dog.  reprogram it into the dog that is in your house.

of all the breeds that come through the shelter, this is the worst breed in the sense of needing so much work.  they don't know how to walk on a leash, they don't know commands, if they are fearful we have to teach them to trust all over again. this all takes time.  if they have been beat that is another set of training issues we deal with them with.  plus all their training.  and once we get them just ready for their cgc they are ready for adoption.  now we need to find the right family or person to adopt the dog to.

remember,  think about all this dog has gone through.  you are not going to give this dog who has been beaten all his life to a family with little kids so he can be beaten on more.

the dog would probably have a heart attack. he would need a more mellow household.

these dogs are so bright and learn very fast. they get their cgc and pet therapy certificates very quickly and the people at the nursing homes love the pits.  they go into schools and do shows on animals.  they go to festivals and do plays as a group.

they do alot of stuff together as alot of them have trained together over the years.  and you are probably wondering how you could have 25 pits together on leash and no one bothers each other.  like i said,  they do things together during the year and they have been to classes together so they are friends.  try putting some other breed of 25 dogs together on leashes and see what happens.  utter cahos.

Just breaks my heart what has been done to this breed. The people who take them in, love them and care for them whether from the beginning or a rescue - - God bless them. People (devils) who cause this precious animal to endure such anguish, there's a good place in hell for them.

Thanks for the Discussion.
