Emergency Preparedness

If you live in an area that is prone to natural disasters, such as hurricanes, earthquakes, or flooding, you should be prepared with a well thought out plan to evacuate and have the supplies and emergency shelter you need for you and your pet kids. This is a serious plan you need to make. Consider these excellent tips by our VIP Member Jacque Fredricks at: Are You Ready For A Hurricane? PLEASE Zoey, copy and paste this to an individual blog in addition to here. This is awesome information! Name the blog simply, Dog First Aide Kit! I would do it, but I'd rather you get the credit for your awesome input, under your blog name. Let me know if it's too much trouble. Thanks! Then, I can turn around and add your blog link to the main links on this page.

I agree with Jacque, excellent idea. PB just keeps getting better and better!

#1 thing to do is have your vets number in your first aid kit, saved in your cell phone and near your home phone.

It never hurts to let your fingers do the walking thru the phone book (BEFORE you need them) and find out who in your area provides emergency medical treatment on weekends/after hours. Remember just because your vet has a 24 hour answering service in some situations there may NOT be TIME to wait for him/her to call back.

Here is a list that was given to us for putting together a basic dog first aid kit.

It's easy to put together a simple first aid kit for your dog or puppy kid.

Basic supplies

Dog owners can treat minor injuries for their pets if they have the appropriate remedies, tools, and equipment available. The following items were included in a first aid kit that the Cincinnati Veterinary Medical Association gave to police dog handlers at a recent workshop. A home first aid kit needs many of the same items.

• Gauze sponges -- 50 four-by-four inch sponges, two per envelope
• Triple antibiotic ointment
• Rubbing alcohol
• Ear syringe -- two ounce capacity
• Ace self-adhering athletic bandage -- three-inch width
• White petroleum jelly (Vaseline or similar)
• Eye wash
• Sterile, non-adherent pads
• Pepto Bismol tablets
• Generic Benadryl capsules -- 25mg, for allergies
• Hydrocortisone acetate -- one percent cream
• Sterile stretch gauze bandage -- three inches by four yards
• Buffered aspirin
• Dermicil hypoallergenic cloth tape one inch by 10 yards
• Hydrogen peroxide
• Kaopectate tablets maximum strength
• Bandage scissors
• Custom splints
• Vet Rap bandage

Other suggested items were:

• Blanket
• Tweezers
• Muzzle
• Hemostats
• Rectal thermometer
• Ziplock bags

• Paperwork, including the dog's health record, medications, local and national poison control numbers, regular veterinary clinic hours and telephone numbers, and emergency clinic hours and telephone
number.
