The history of small dog clothing goes back to the days when King Arthur
ruled over Great Britain in 520 A.D. They used dogs in the military and
in law enforcement, so they wore protective clothing to help keep them
safe in an attack or from the environment.

Today small dog clothing is used for some of the same reasons. It
protects the dog from cuts, scratches and even bad weather. But today’s
small dog clothing is much more fashionable. Some of the items available
for today’s small dogs are collars, coats, costumes, sweaters, shirts,
dresses and shoes.

Every dog needs to have a collar. The collar holds the identification of
the dog in case it ever gets lost. Some owners think of the collar as
the dogs jewelry and make a definite fashion statement. Dogs could have
several collars for several different types of occasion. These collars
can be filled with jewels or made of the finest velvet. Owners like
their dogs to look good, because that makes them look good too.

One of the most popular form of small dog clothing today is the dog hat.
Many dog owners have many reasons for dressing their dog in a hat. Some
do it to protect the dog from the weather and some do it as a fashion
statement. Dog hats can look a lot like human hats and have the logo of
the owners favorite team on it. Or it can be fluffy and pretty or furry
and sheik. It is not uncommon for a dog and its owner to be wearing the
same hat. Go to a dog park and check out dogs and their owners. You'd be
surprised at how many dogs and owners are wearing their favorite team
on their hats.

Small dog clothes can even include harnesses and leashes. They can be
plain looking for your daily walk or they can have jewels on them if you
are going to a public event and want to make a statement.

And don't forget about the hair accessories, this is an important part
of small dog clothing. After getting bathed and brushed, your dog needs
to look pretty. You can go for a small bow that makes your dog look
cute, or you can go for a big bow that says, "Hey look at me!" Small dog
clothing says a lot about your dog and probably more about you.

Coats and sweaters can be an important part of small dog clothing as
well. Again, they can be for fashion or to protect your dog from the
weather.
