This is my English Lab Retriever Moose Track. He was the last puppy left out of the litter. Real shy, REALLY shy!! I really wanted a yellow Lab, but he looked so scared and afraid ,, shaking.
Brought him home. He got along great with a Pug, English Bulldog and a French Bulldog. Well, this was in the fall and about when he was 4 mo old, it was snowing really hard. At 5AM we are up and outside for potty call. He was running , jumping and biting snow, Acting like a puppy that he was.. We have a slight grade that goes down into a bottom lawn, and there rocks built up like a ledge to keep the bank from washing out. Well he jumped over the bank he went out of site, and then I heard it, an AWFUL, Cry, Like I never want to hear again.... I yelled his name, and all I could hear was his yelping and crying. Mick, our English Bulldog, came up the bank , and come to me, turning around wanting me to follow him fashion. I ran inside woke up hubby and said Moose Track just broke his leg,, I just knew.. So I turned and ran back out to go over bank and get him, and there he was, Mick, trying to pick him up with his big head and Moose dragging himself through the snow,, I ran picked him up carried him to house there hubby met me door opened, I laid him on our bed, and his front right leg you could tell was all mangled....
I called our vet he said bring him right away. We drove in a blinding snow storm, as we live in Upstate NY, on the Tughill. By the time we got there he was going into shock.. They took us in Xrayed his leg,,,, His shoulder ball was out of scocket, the femar bone was broke, the elbow, was the worst, Inside the elbow it was just pulled and twisted apart,,, and his paw was broken. He must of jumped in the rocks and turned at the same time and yanked, to do such damage, Our orthopedic was out for kidney stones. and My other vet said I should take him to Cornell, well i couldn't afford that. Next was to amputate the leg, I just started crying and left.
See, just a year before this pup, I lost my service dog on the day of my 6 hour back surgery, He was my heart, my life, and it took me a year to finally give in and get another dog, and here right in front of my eyes he was going too.... They came back and told me they were going to give him medication to get him out of pain and stablize him and his condition. While I tried to figure what to do, They suggested because this kind of dog gets huge in the chest & head, maybe he would'nt get around good on 3 legs, So other option was to put him down.....
We went home to think about it. I got a call from the vets and my orthopedic vet signed himself out of the hospital and was going to operate on Moosetrack, and another dog that got hit that morning by a snowplow. So he did. It was a long surgery, 2 screws, 4 pins, and wire in his elbow. He was in the hospital for 4 days, and he came home on lease only and creat for 6 weeks, BOY-Oh-Boy, that was the longest 6 weeks, the more time the better he felt , beeing a puppy he wanted to play.
He has a quite a limp but he can run like the wind. he will be neudered June 10. They will X ray that leg and take out some of the metal, thinking maybe he is in some pain because of that...
Here he is now. He weighs 70 lbs, and is almost 9 mo. old. He is very smart, although he will always have that limp, He made it and he sure is a trooper to withstand all that pain.....The only thing he wanted was me to hold him and he was fine......
Thus ends Moose Tracks first 8 mo of his life.
