Vee had been critically ill and was in ICU and then a Physical Rehab Hospital for a long time. Her Dad and I had talked about getting a dog but had never done it. Right before Vee's second surgury she was really upset and just wanted to 'go home'. We promised her that when she got all better we would bring a black and white 'Oreo' dog home that looked like the one her and Mommy had seen riding in a convertible in the parking lot at Walmart one day.
When Vee got home we started Internet searches looking for Border Collie breeders. We knew nothing about 'resues' then but something great happened. We found the site for the Great Lakes Border Collie Rescue and filled out an application.
BC's aren't always great with little kids because they are very active and can be rambunctious dogs but Cayla at the GLBCR let us know about a great, sweet and kid loving BC that had just come into rescue. Her name was Zoey and not only did she love little kids she was also very gentle natured.
We drove all the way over to Lake Orion which is the other side of Detroit. It took us almost 4 hours but we went there and met Zoey.
Vee had only learned to walk again about a month before that so she was still very unsteady. Because she was only 3 years old she was really tiny too but the moment she took Zoey's leash and they started walking together it was obvious it was a perfect match. Zoey stopped and sat when Vee needed to slow down and Zoey helped Vee manuver across the bumpy ground at the park.
It was a match made in heaven.
About a week later Patty, another volunteer dropped Zoey off at our house and she had been a part of our family ever since.
