Hello Everyone,

I thought to start this thread for pictures and videos on doves other than the two most commonly kept species:  ringneck doves and diamond doves.  This thread can also be used for pictures of exotic dove species and all pigeon species.

To start us off, here is a picture that member Wanda had posted in another thread but that I have moved here since these birds can be considered exotic doves.

From the Exotic Endeavors-Doves page:  http://www.exoticendeavors.com/doves.html

Please feel free to post pictures of these types of doves or pigeons here.  Enjoy!  :-)

its says its a dove, but i am not sure what do you say Sal, they called it the "frill back dove"

Wanda, that's a frillback pigeon...though the guy pictured here could also be a dove-pigeon hybrid, or simply be a young dove or a young pigeon.  I'm wondering because of the beak shape; it doesn't look like the usual pigeon beak shape.

The frillback pigeon is a breed most commonly seen at bird fancier shows.  They are bred to produce that "curly" feather effect you see on this bird.  Beautiful picture!  What site did you get this picture from? I'd love to check it out, as maybe I can add it to my site's list of resources.

Did you know that there is no scientific difference between a dove and a pigeon?  The two terms are used interchangeably to describe the same bird.  However, the smaller bird species are most commonly called "doves" and the larger bird species "pigeons".

What a beautiful bird!!!!

Sal:

What is the name of this pigeon?  I found the picture but no description!

heck that looks like Elvis lol Kathi, i must say Sal i never knew there was such unique pigeons, karl would love the feathers for fly tying. Remember that Sal when they molt the feathers are very valuable.!!

Yes Wanda, the feathers are valuable indeed.  These birds are bred for show and so feather appearance is very important.

(The following is totally off-topic of this discussion, which is why I'm including it in parenthesis:  speaking of an Elvis dove/pigeon, there is an actual dove out there, a tufted orange whiteback silky ringneck dove to be exact, whose name is Elvis...you'll see why if you click on this link: http://dovepage.com/columbary/index.html )

Kathi, that is a Jacobin Pigeon which is a type of hooded fancy pigeon, also bred for bird shows.  I was able to find a description for it with the picture you posted, at:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jacobin_(pigeon)

There's lots of domesticated breeds and species, but have you seen exotic doves and exotic pigeons in a zoo or animal park?

Now that you gave me the name Jacobin it rings a bell with me.  Thanks for posting these links, I am going to each one and hopefully will learn some more about doves and pigeons.  I really love this group!
