VA Problems and Service Dogs

Each year service dogs are offered through a program to have their eyes and dental checked for free.  The UF Vet School is 70 miles from my home; directly across from the VA Gainesville, FL Hospital.  I decided to kill two birds in one trip, took my newly certified service dog, his certified school completion papers with me to the VA Hospital to obtain his (employee) VA Badge.  This has been required for all the other service animals I have had in the last 23 years.  I could not believe after following the instructions of a VA Police Officer as to where I needed to go, and 7 other individuals.....no one could direct me to the proper location to get this completed.  Instead, I was called a liar.  That in 30 years NEVER had the VA took a picture of a service dog.  I tried to explain just five years ago, it was done.   I kept my cool, never raised my voice.  I offered all individuals permission to check my personal file, and to look up the name of the last service dog that I had in the data base.   As he would have been recorded as a employee.   They would not take the time.  Instead,  I was asked to leave the hospital by a young VA Police Officer or be arrested.    Need I say, a call to my local Congressman was made when I got home.  I needed to vent and I hope you don't mind.  At 60 yrs of age being called a liar is upsetting.  I wonder if other veterans have had the same type of problems with a school trained animal?   Good side......I have made it this long, I will continue.  :-)

Awe sweetie, that's beyond disrespectful.. I really wonder if parents raised such tasteless kids, that feel they have a right to call you a liar? Do they know you? Do you have a history, NO! Just laziness on their behalf.. Show your elders respect! Do your job kids.. Keep writing letters as, when we call them they ignore it and call us old complainers.. I always use a tactic.. I say, so your alright with me not only contacting, your boss, the government , and THE press over your accusations .. I would also write down letters to bosses, your governor, and press.. Because your in the wrong, and you need to find the paper work! It works for me, they quiver in their boots hearing press!! Good luck!

Contacting the press sounds like a great idea.  There are so many stories about vets in the news that the theme is likely to be popular with them.  It is a good lesson to learn customer service and respect, and these young people could stand to be taught each.

I hope you and your pup are having a good weekend despite this unpleasantness.
