Here I am again, bright and early, and I might add a very COLD morning. As some of you might know I work at a very small Humane Society, I am going to ramble on (as my dear hubby puts it) PLEASE! PLEASE! PLEASE! when you are considering getting a pet no matter what it may, whether you adopt or purchase, THINK it through. As I posted on my last blog , I was so happy for “Gracie”(a 3 yr old dog, we rescued from Animal Control, housebroken, knows her manners, great w/ kids. Her “owners got another dog and didn‘t have “time for her“) to get adopted, along with “Misty”(a young cat dumped at our gate w/ a litter of kittens in a soaking wet crate). Well, as soon as I opened my office, Gracie’s adopter called. He “needs” to bring Gracie back. On and on he went about what a wonderful dog she is. But, his dog did not “like” her. Mind you this was in less then 48 hours. Like people animals aren’t always best friends immediately it takes time for them to get adjusted. So back she came. Luckily I had recently widowed gentlemen looking for a companion and she another home within an hour of coming back. I truly believe she will brighten his days and she will have a wonderful life. You always have to believe.
No sooner had I got finished w/ all this, in marches the woman that adopted Misty. Letting my office cat Diamond out, without an apology. “OOPS I let the cat out.” Anyway, she proceeds to tell me what a mean vicious cat Misty is. Which can not be farther from the truth, I have had Misty since early spring and she is a very sweet natured cat. Trying to make a long story short….lol,
She was on the side of rude and seemed to enjoy saying mean things about Misty. And again at the root of it all her cat did not “like” Misty. I have never had a cat “bow” up on me unless it was terrified. One of her comments along w/ many others. So as she was leaving, she spots the 2 pug x puppies I have, and says if the client doesn’t come for the female she will take it. In a cold day in h… she will.
So my point to all of this is, PLEASE think, One your pet doesn’t “need” a playmate, you do. Two, it isn’t always easy bringing another animal into your home with existing pets, on occasion there is an adjustment period that has to be worked through. (If I reacted irrationally when I brought Rosie home, she would have been gone in a day. It took Tucker a little more then a month to accept her, and there are still days he only tolerates her.) Three, it is a life long commitment. Four, it can be very expensive, above and beyond the average cost. There can be unforeseen medical costs. And this is barely scratching the surface. It is a life long commitment, just like having a child. But they will be forever dependent on you, unlike a child who grows up and hopefully goes out on their own…..lol(I have 6 children)I have only hit the tip of the ice berg, I could go on forever as to all the reasons and excuses why I end up with these “pets” that were a good idea at one time.
So, PLEASE! PLEASE! PLEASE! Take the time to think about it with your brain and wallet first and your heart second. Hopefully you have survived my ramblings. It just saddens my heart some days when I see what some of my dogs and cats have to go through just to get a good home, and it isn’t their fault. They are in a predicament created by humans.
