[Grooming Tips]

Brushing   Brush in the direction of hair growth, beginning at the head, and work towards the tail and down the legs. Brushing removes loose hair and daily brushing of longhaired and double-coated dogs removes dead hair from the undercoat to help prevent matting.

Slicker brushes are ideal for this purpose but are also a good general brush for all breeds if used lightly Pin brushes, with rounded tips to prevent damage to the skin, are good for dogs with long, fine hair such as Silky Terriers. They can also be used to fluff the coat by brushing against the direction of hair growth Bristle brushes are good for dogs with very long coats, such as the Afghan, and help add shine to the short coat Grooming mitts are also good for shorthaired breeds to add polish and shine once the loose hairs are removed.

Combing or brushing them every day around the same time, they usually will get used to it. I know, as my dogs and cats did, before they had past on. It cuts down on the loose hair that floats around and falls on your furniture or whatever.

What can I do for my Sheltie to get him to cooperate in daily brushing? I have a "soft" slicker brush that I am using. But he really hates it. I use snacks and treats, have the grooming session after a long walk at the same time every night. But after two years he still bites the brush and the session is unpleasant for both of us. I never raise my voice, or punish him in any way. I give him the treats right away for any behavior that is not confrontational. I ignore all the other behaviors. I stop the session after 15 min. or when it's clear that he is done. I always give him a last treat at the end, no matter what so that the session ends on a positive note. At least for him. I need to make better progress though. Maybe I'm using the wrong brush? Any help would be appreciated Thank you.
