This breed was an exclusive group of dogs bred by Buddhist monks that includes the Lhasa Apso and Tibetan Spaniel. The Buddist monks then sent a Shih Tzu to the Chinese emperors of the Manchu Dynasty from the middle of the 19th Century where it became a favored pet.
The Shih Tzu is often called "the chrysanthemum-faced dog" because of the way the hair grows around their face, brimming it like a flower. The word Shih Tzu also means "lion", and because of the arrogance of this "king of dogs" it is also sometimes called Chinese Lion Dog.
