I just read this on the ASPCA community.
Years ago, I witnessed a man beating his german shepherd with a thin chain as the dog sat in the back of his pickup truck. It was broad daylight in a busy plaza, and no one made a move to help the dog. I went over to the man, opened the tailgate and took the dog's leash, and led him to my car. The man was spouting obscenities and telling me to let go of his dog. I drove off with the dog, and went home. As I was tending to open cuts and bruises on the dogs back and sides, there was a knock at my door. I opened it and the police officer standing there looked at me and then at the dog who had followed me to the door. He said a gentleman had called and reported someone with my license plate had stolen his dog. I said 'I haven't seen this dog you refer to, but if I had, then I would notice the cuts and bruises all over his body.' I parted the dog's fur and showed the officer the damage. He smiled and said 'Well, I can see there's no dog here. He must have given the wrong plate number.' and with that he left.
My heart was beating like crazy, but I was overjoyed at the officer letting me save this beautiful dog. The dog was passed along the 'underground railroad' receiving vet attention and finally a good home.
Looking back, I think I was lucky because I'm 6'5" tall and I guess intimidated the other man. My question is this. Would you break the law to save an animal knowing it is MORALLY right, but in some cases legally wrong? I'd like to think I was in the right, and not just some vigilante.
